CPF is a grant-making foundation that has funded over 2,100 hands-on environmental education projects with schools and non-profits that serve children in 50 U.S. states and 26 countries. In addition to its Grants Program, the Captain Planet Foundation also operates Project Learning Garden, with more than 360 school gardens in metro Atlanta and across the lower 48 states; Project Hero, which is challenging kids to save endangered species across the country; and the Institute at CPF, which is training Georgia educators in science-based outdoor learning strategies and lessons. Television and motion pictures that depict spaceflight have great power to shape public conceptions of travel between the planets and stars, despite audience awareness that thetechnologies shown are the spurious result of special effects technologies, rather than beingrepresentations of reality. A very few films have attempted to be realistic in all senses of theterm, but they are greatly outnumbered by others that are fantastic in violating the laws ofscience while projecting exciting images. In addition, the relative popularities of different kindsof spaceflight films speak volumes about what travel beyond the Earth already means toAmerican audiences. This chapter will organize much of the discussion around the equivalentof questionnaire survey data, the ratings given by tens of thousands of people to 80 spaceflightmovies in the Netflix recommender system, augmented by data from the Internet MovieDataBase, and intensive qualitative analysis of specific examples such as the movie DestinationMoon and the television series Babylon 5.
